Position Overview:
KJ Controls is seeking a Senior Controls Engineer to join our engineering team and help lead the design and delivery of industrial control systems.
This role will work closely with the Chief Technical Officer (CTO) and guide a small team of engineers, designers, and drafters responsible for producing control system drawings and documentation.
The successful candidate will help ensure that engineering deliverables are accurate, buildable, and produced efficiently, while also supporting projects through testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting when required.
This role is ideal for an experienced automation engineer who enjoys both technical design work and mentoring junior staff.
Responsibilities:
As a Senior Controls Engineer at KJ Controls, your responsibilities will include:
Engineering & Design Leadership
- Lead a small engineering and design team in producing high-quality control system drawing packages
- Review and approve electrical and instrumentation drawings
- Ensure designs are practical, buildable, and compliant with applicable codes and standards
- Work with the CTO to develop and maintain engineering and CAD standards
Technical Support & Problem Solving
- Assist with troubleshooting industrial control systems including PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, instrumentation, and industrial networks
- Provide technical guidance to engineers, designers, and field technicians
- Support commissioning activities and field troubleshooting when required
Project Collaboration
- Work with project managers and estimating teams to provide technical input during project planning and proposals
- Coordinate with production staff to ensure designs are ready for fabrication
- Participate in factory testing of control panels and automation systems
Continuous Improvement
- Help improve engineering processes and documentation standards
- Support training and development of junior technical staff
- Capture lessons learned from projects and apply improvements to future designs
Qualifications:
To be considered for this position, you should have:
- Background in Electrical Engineering, Instrumentation, Industrial Automation, or a related field
- Several years of experience in industrial control systems design or automation engineering
- Experience producing electrical and instrumentation drawings
- Experience using CAD software, preferably AutoCAD Electrical
- Experience commissioning and troubleshooting industrial control systems
- Working knowledge of PLC-based control systems
The following would be considered assets:
- Professional designation (P.Eng. or eligibility)
- Experience with municipal water or wastewater automation systems
- Experience with SCADA systems and industrial networking
- Experience with industrial panel design and fabrication
Compensation

...We are seeking a Project Engineer with experience in industrial automation and control systems. This role is responsible for the technical execution of projects across their lifecycle, including design, coordination, and commissioning.
The Project Engineer will take ownership of the technical aspects of assigned projects while working closely with internal teams and clients. While this role does not lead estimating or proposal development, it plays a key supporting role by providing technical input to the sales team during project development.
Responsibilities:
- Lead the technical execution of industrial automation projects from design through commissioning and closeout.
- Produce and oversee control system documentation, including: Control panel and/or MCC drawings, Bills of materials (BOMs), Cable schedules and datasheets, and Installation details and manuals.
- Develop and support: Control narratives, PLC, HMI, and SCADA programming, VFD and soft starter configuration, and instrumentation integration.
- Coordinate with internal teams, including drafting, panel shop, programming, and field services.
- Support procurement activities by specifying components and ensuring alignment with project requirements, budgets, and timelines.
- Plan and participate in Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT).
- Conduct site visits for field verification, installation support, and commissioning activities.
- Troubleshoot and resolve control system and integration issues in the field.
- Maintain organized and accurate project documentation and revision control.
- Support the sales team by providing technical input for estimating, system design concepts, and proposal development.
- Communicate effectively with clients, consultants, and vendors to coordinate technical requirements and resolve issues.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Electrical, Mechatronics, or Controls Engineering.
- 4+ years of experience in industrial automation or control systems.
- Registered as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.), or Engineer in Training (EIT) with EGBC preferred but not required.
- Strong knowledge of PLCs, HMIs, SCADA, VFDs, instrumentation, and industrial control systems.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD Electrical or equivalent design tools.
- Experience with multi-phase industrial projects (design through commissioning).
- Strong problem-solving, communication, and organizational skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and work both independently and within a team.

This role also supports the sales team by assisting with drawing takeoffs, preliminary layouts, and technical input during project development.
Responsibilities:
- Produce and maintain electrical design packages, including:
- Control panel and MCC drawings
- Bills of materials (BOMs)
- Cable schedules and wiring diagrams
- Layouts and installation details
- Develop panel layouts and ensure designs are practical for manufacturing and installation.
- Work closely with Project Engineers to translate design concepts into detailed drawings.
- Coordinate with the panel shop and field teams to resolve design issues and improve constructability.
- Support procurement by assisting with BOM development and component selection.
- Revise drawings based on internal reviews, client feedback, and site conditions.
- Participate in design reviews and contribute to the continuous improvement of standards and templates.
- Assist with Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) documentation and updates.
- Support the sales team by preparing preliminary drawings, takeoffs, and technical input for estimates and proposals.
- Maintain organized drawing sets and revision control.
Qualifications:
- Diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology, Controls, or a related field.
- 2+ years of experience in industrial electrical or control system design.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD Electrical (or similar design software).
- Strong understanding of:
- Industrial control panels and MCCs
- PLC I/O systems and field wiring
- Electrical schematics and layouts
- Familiarity with CSA/UL standards (UL 508A, CSA 286 experience is an asset).
